Reflection 4 : (Studying Abroad) - Academic Speaking
Go International: How studying abroad can change your life
Speaker: Alexander Au
So I was given the assignment to watch a video. I watched a man named Alexander Au sharing an experience he learned from his curriculum while studying abroad. According to Alex, many people attend college because they want a better life and a stable economy. But according to Alex, we should give higher value to higher education. So, I learned from this explanation that we achieve Higher Education not only to get a degree but also to increase our knowledge and improve ourselves.
According to Alex, higher education should make us people who can build complex relationships that allow us to express ourselves and contribute to democracy. So we should try studying abroad so you know some of the experiences you will get. Because according to Alex himself, when studying abroad, there are many different aspects, such as different manners, cultures, languages, and environments. For example, in Germany, people queue when they want to get on the bus, people line up neatly, while in Mexico, people enter without order. Alex also gives examples of group work from countries such as Paris and Germany. What is the difference in group work? The Paris group appoints someone to be the leader, and the leader does nothing while the German team works together. From that example, I learned that when we study abroad, we increase our academic knowledge and our knowledge of humanity, language, culture, and environment and see the world from a different perspective. And from Alex, I also learned that no one knows where the future is, but the future is within our capabilities, namely by improving ourselves in a different environment. So from this video, I learned that higher education doesn't change our whole person. It just adds qualities that might help you in your bright future.
